What every one of us can do for our country

What we can do is very simple. All of us must do the jobs we are supposed to be doing, properly.

Sounds simple but not working in practice!

Vajpayee is not doing his work, he is not forcing the pace for development, nor selling public sector undertakings to foreign companies to attract foreign investment or cutting down the govt size. He is not ensuring that his cabinet is talented and does it's work. Nor making parliament do its job properly. Only he has the power to do all that. Not I.

I can only do the things properly, over which I have power. I have power over myself and my students. All I can do for India is to be a good pathologist, a good teacher and a good researcher. And teach my students to be the same, by setting an example.

The head of a department has much more power. All of the staff are under his power. The good running of the dept is his responsibility. If there are lacunae, no matter what, the responsibility is his. It is his job to see to it that the stenos, peons, sweepers, technical staff, maintenance staff, all do their work well. This is in addition to ensuring that academic activities are upto standard. Any lacunae in a dept are on his head.

The director of an institute has even more power. It is his job to see to it that the hospital runs properly, that patients recieve a fair treatment, that there is no corruption, that all the staff are working as they should, and that the academic standards are fulfilled. If in any institute they are not, it is the director's fault.

The consultant cannot tell his head to work properly, the head cannot tell the director to work properly. One can only do that which is under one's power, people out of or above ones power cannot be controlled.

People cannot complain or make excuses. Because another dept is working badly is not an excuse for the head of dept to not look after his own. Comparative betterness is not enough, absolute goodness is a must.

Indians are a lazy people. It is for a consultant to ensure that his students do not shirk work and for a head to ensure all of his staff work. The principle of zero tolerance must be practiced. If you allow one person to get away with something, soon all will follow suit.

So do not complain that other places are dirty, clean up your department, your room, your own house and it's surroundings. Then complain. Same with work, banks, govt servants, everything.

But in the end, you can only do that over which you have power. So all goodness can only come from the PM who is the most powerful man in India. If he ensures a good cabinet and IAS, then all down the line will become good. So perk up Vajpayee, and do your job!
